Get More Value From Your Business With a Business Mentor

Success with Business Mentoring:  Why It Works

Navigating the changing tides of business can be challenging. Getting a mentor is one of the critical success factors. In fact 70% of all successful businesses that survive their first 5 years have a business mentor.

The dilemma many business owners and directors face are distinguishing the exceptional, experienced, professional and skilled from the mediocrity of the rest of the pack. A single undesirable experience can leave a lasting impression over the course of a business career. This results in scepticism towards mentoring. Yet, the fruits of excellent mentoring are undeniable, and more importantly, statistically proven.

The Significance of A Business Mentor

Research affirms that mentorship plays a crucial role in attaining success in business. Business stalwarts have often attributed their achievements to mentoring. 80% of CEOs attest to having received mentorship at some phase in their entrepreneurial journey. The importance becomes even clearer considering that 93% of flourishing start-ups credit their success to effective mentorship.

Despite the high failing rate among new businesses. 30% of which do not celebrate their second anniversary. Less than 50% reach their fifth. Businesses with active mentors tell a different story with around 70% of them crossing the key five-year milestone.

My Journey as A Professional Business Mentor

Inspired by the effectiveness of good mentorship, I pursued master’s level qualifications in Business Mentoring and in Mentoring Supervision (mentoring other professional mentors), aiming to extend my skills as a trusted business mentor. This decision resonated with my clients who, recognizing the impact of mentorship, nominated me for the Business Mentor of the Year Award. It’s an accolade I was honoured to receive in 4 consecutive years.

The Essential Role of Business Mentors in Success

Through mentoring, my clients could tap into my reservoir of knowledge and experience, in my area of expertise—Succession and Exit Planning. It’s crucial for all business owners. Avoiding succession and exit planning means running the risk of potentially relinquishing much of their business value due to poor exit strategies. In fact, a staggering 80% of businesses never find a buyer primarily due to lack of preparation. Over 90% of businesses are basically unsalable.  In fact, a business only has a 1 in 2222 chance of selling for its optimal value.

Overcoming Isolation through Mentorship

In my own experience, the burden of leading a business can often feel isolating. Independence is a doubled-edged sword— on one hand, you have no one dictating how you should work. But on the other side, the lack of a guiding voice might leave you feeling uncertain or lost. However, when my mentors stepped in, they dispelled that sense of isolation. In fact, one of the most rewarding aspects of business mentoring is witnessing a client regain their confidence, once again thriving in their business.

Mentors – An Entrepreneur’s Trusted Adviser

As mentors, we are defined by our role as an “experienced and trusted adviser.” We take on various roles – confidantes when needed and bearers of strict advice when necessary. Our most fulfilling task is passing on valuable insights to help our clients make informed decisions, enhancing their leadership competencies.

Expectations from a Business Mentor

It’s important to understand what a mentor does, and more specifically, what they do not. Mentors facilitate knowledge transfer and offer advice. However, they do not intervene or perform tasks directly in your business—that’s a consultant’s job!

Success Through Mentorship: Thoughts from Oprah Winfrey

“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself,” in the wise words of Oprah Winfrey. Access to a mentor who understands your personal and business experiences is invaluable. They offer encouragement, supported by their own journey, and guide you towards your goals.

Business Mentors: The Heroes in my Entrepreneurial Journey

My mentors supported me during challenging times, even helping me make tough calls like premature exits from a business to evade severe burnout. Their support and guidance instilled in me the necessary confidence to continue. To me, my mentors are my heroes, and their influence has shaped my work as a mentor today. I witness their impact through the success of the businesses I mentor—proof of the transformative power of effective mentorship.
